National Hedgerow Week 2025

It's National Hedgerow Week, and here at FoRCE, we're celebrating this initiative by The Tree Council and the Hedgelink coalition as well as announcing our own exciting Hedgerows project which launches this year.

Hedgerows Need Our Help...

As the NHW website reminds us, "Hedgerows are the often-unsung heroes of the British countryside, yet they form the UK’s largest wildlife habitat, are a major part of our landscape and cultural heritage, and are crucial to halting biodiversity decline and tackling climate change." Hedgerows contribute considerably to the health of our green spaces, which in turn can enhance the enjoyment and wellbeing of those who visit them.

FoRCE has an ambitious plan to restore old hedges and introduce some new ones to the Esplanade Gardens and Churchfields, using native species and traditional hedgelaying techniques.  We'll be bringing you regular updates as we plan this project, so be sure to keep an eye on our Hedgerows Project page for volunteering opportunities.

...and FoRCE Needs Yours!

As the project takes shape, we're looking for someone to join our team as our Hedgerow Helper. You don't need any previous experience, and it could be a great opportunity to learn new skills and make new friends.

“We’re looking for someone with a passion for wildlife and a willingness to get involved,” said FoRCE Chair Terry Clennell. “Our aim is to create and care for more hedgerows across the Esplanade and Churchfields — but we need community support to bring that vision to life. The role is ideal for anyone with a love of nature — no experience needed, just enthusiasm."

The Future of Hedgerows

The theme of National Hedgerow Week 2025 is "The Future of Hedgerows". According to The Tree Council's website:

"While the Government’s Environmental Improvement Plan set ambitious targets to create 45,000 miles of new or restored hedgerow by 2050, sources of funding to support management of existing hedges, and the laying of new ones are uncertain. As good hedgerow management is so dependent on traditional skills and crafts, it’s vital that pathways exist for passionate people to pursue green careers to ensure that hedgerows thrive for generations to come."

We'll be expanding on this theme during the coming week and beyond, laying out in more detail how FoRCE will be contributing to the government's plan by creating new hedgerows and revitalising existing ones, as well as supporting and encouraging the traditional skills and crafts needed to care for them. Make sure that you're following us on Facebook, Instagram and X to keep up with developments, and check in regularly with our Hedgerows Project page.

As well as volunteering your time, you can also help us create and care for our hedgerows by making a donation. With your support, we can bring the beauty and benefit of healthy hedgerows to our cherished green spaces.
