Hedgerows

A hedgerow on a beautifully sunny day

Our next major gardening initiative focuses on planting native hedgerows, such as along the fence that adjoins Hathaway Court and the park. This project is not only about enhancing the park’s appearance but also creating habitats and food sources for local wildlife. By introducing a mix of native shrubs and trees, we aim to foster biodiversity and strengthen the ecological balance of the area.

Additionally, the hedgerow will serve as a natural barrier, helping to deter antisocial behaviour by creating a defined natural preventative barrier. It’s a project that benefits both the environment and the community, aligning with our mission to protect and enhance Rochester’s green spaces.

Why Native Hedgerows?

Planting native hedgerows is just one step in our larger mission to create sustainable and thriving green spaces for the community. By working together, we can ensure that the park remains a safe, welcoming, and biodiverse area for generations to come.

Native hedgerows offer numerous environmental and social benefits:

  • Wildlife Habitats: They provide shelter and nesting sites for birds, mammals, and insects, while offering berries, nuts, and foliage as year-round food sources
  • Biodiversity Boost: Native species support local ecosystems by encouraging pollinators and other beneficial wildlife
  • Natural Beauty: A well-maintained hedgerow enhances the landscape and creates a green, welcoming space for everyone

What We’re Planting

Our hedgerow will include a variety of native species chosen for their ecological value and suitability for the area, such as:

  • Hawthorn
  • Blackthorn
  • Dog Rose
  • Hazel
  • Field Maple
  • Elder

These species not only thrive in the local environment but also contribute to the seasonal beauty of the park, with blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, and colourful berries in autumn.

How You Can Help

This project offers plenty of opportunities for volunteers to make a difference. If you’d like to volunteer, take a look at our Join in page for a list of our volunteer sessions.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Clearing and planting: Join us for planting sessions, where we’ll be preparing the ground, planting shrubs, and ensuring the young hedgerow gets off to the best start
  • Ongoing Care: Help with watering, mulching, and maintaining the hedgerow as it establishes itself

No gardening experience is needed, just a willingness to get your hands dirty and contribute to a greener, healthier Rochester.
