Ornate Lights

The ornate iron lamps that frame the northernmost entrance to the Esplanade Gardens

The iconic ornate lights that have sat astride the entrance of the Esplanade Gardens were made at the McFarlane’s Saracen Foundry. They were rescued from the Old Bridge in the 1970s when the adjacent derelict railway bridge was converted to take road traffic. The lamps have four scroll feet and acanthus leaf ornamentation. They originally housed gas lamps and are mounted on mid-Victorian granite plinths.

Now over a century old, these lamp columns have illuminated the riverside for generations, but time, weather and vandalism have taken their toll. Recognising their importance to the character of the area, FoRCE has collaborated with the Rochester Bridge Trust (RBT), the City of Rochester Society and Medway Council to restore these unique structures to their former glory.

The Restoration Journey

The restoration process has involved meticulous planning and craftsmanship to ensure the lights are preserved for future generations. Key steps include:

  • Condition Survey: Before removal, each lamp column underwent a full condition survey, including detailed photographs and documentation of their state. Non-destructive dye testing was conducted to identify hidden defects, such as cracks or damage, ensuring repairs are thorough and precise
  • Removal and Transportation: The lamp columns and their lanterns were carefully dismantled and transported to specialist facilities. Cast Iron Welding Services in Coalville has taken charge of restoring the intricate columns, while Pudsey Diamond in Hampshire is creating new lanterns inspired by the originals
  • Sustainability Focus: As much of the original cast iron as possible is being reused, reducing the carbon footprint of the restoration. This sustainable approach aligns with our broader commitment to environmentally conscious projects
  • Uncovering History: During the process, an unexpected discovery was made: parts of the columns were copper-plated, a feature not present on their counterparts on the Old Bridge. The reasons for this plating remain unclear, but its removal has allowed experts to reveal and address the underlying structure
  • Detailed Finishing: The restored columns will feature meticulously recreated decorative details, including oranges, apples, and grapes, painted to match the original colour schedule identified during the Rochester Bridge Refurbishment Project

Looking Ahead

The restored lamp columns are set to return to the Esplanade Gardens, where they will once again light up Rochester’s riverside. This project highlights the importance of preserving local heritage while integrating modern techniques and sustainability.

FoRCE is proud to support this initiative, which not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the Esplanade but also reinforces the sense of community pride in Rochester’s historic assets.
