Bulb planting is one of FoRCE’s long-standing efforts to bring early visual interest and support pollinators in our parks. Over the years, we’ve planted a variety of bulbs, including daffodils, alliums, and crocuses, to create vibrant displays that signal the arrival of spring. These bulbs not only brighten the landscape but also provide an early-season supply of pollen for bees and other pollinators.
This initiative complements planting efforts by Medway Council, working together to make our parks more beautiful and ecologically valuable.
Why Bulb Planting Matters
Bulbs are a small but impactful way to enhance our green spaces:
-
Seasonal Beauty: Their blooms add pops of colour to the parks after winter, creating a cheerful and inviting atmosphere
-
Pollinator Support: Early-flowering bulbs provide vital pollen and nectar for bees and other insects when other sources are scarce
-
Community Pride: Seeing the results of collective effort in the form of blooming flowers fosters a sense of community and care for our shared spaces
Our Planting Efforts
Each autumn, we plant a variety of spring-flowering bulbs across the Esplanade and Churchfields. Some of our favourite choices include:
-
Daffodils: Their bright yellow blooms are a classic symbol of spring
-
Alliums: Striking spherical flowers that attract bees and add structural interest
-
Crocuses: Delicate, colourful blooms that often appear as the first sign of spring
By layering different species, we ensure a succession of blooms that last throughout the season.
