The Rochester Trail is an exciting way to explore the green spaces, heritage, and breathtaking views that make Rochester so special. Officially opened by the Mayor of Medway, this trail has been brought to life with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and connects the heart of Rochester with Borstal through a scenic route of historical landmarks and natural beauty.
A Collaborative Effort
The Rochester Trail is a testament to the power of collaboration. FoRCE worked closely with other local Friends groups to design the trail’s route and create an informative leaflet and noticeboards, to ensure it’s accessible to everyone. By combining our collective knowledge and passion for Rochester’s green spaces, we’ve crafted a trail that not only showcases the area’s natural beauty but also connects the community to its heritage.
This project also aligns with FoRCE’s commitment to improving community wellbeing. Walking the trail provides an opportunity to connect with nature, stay active, and enjoy the mental health benefits of spending time outdoors. It’s a reminder of how our shared green spaces contribute to a healthier, happier community.
The Route
The main trail spans 6 miles (9 km) and takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours to complete. It features a mix of open fields, allotments, woodland, riverbanks, marshes, valleys, and hills. Along the way, you’ll encounter historic sites, including Rochester Castle, Rochester Cathedral, and Fort Borstal, as well as tranquil green spaces like the Esplanade Gardens, Churchfields, and Watts Meadow.
For a shorter option, the linking route marked with blue waymarkers is 1.2 miles (2 km) and perfect for those with less time or wanting a gentler walk.
What to Expect
- Accessibility: The trail mostly follows surfaced paths, though some sections, like Watts Meadow, may become muddy during winter. There are no steps, and the route includes benches for rest stops
- Nature and Wildlife: Experience Rochester’s diverse ecosystems, from salt marshes to wooded trails, with opportunities to spot local wildlife and seasonal blooms
- Best Direction: We recommend walking the route clockwise to make the most of the views and natural flow
- Be Prepared: Wear sturdy shoes, especially in winter, and bring water
- Map and Resources: Keep an eye out for the new information board installed near the pier/cannon in Esplanade Gardens. For more details on the trail and additional routes, take a look at the Visit Medway website or download the trail leaflet
