At FoRCE, we believe that action speaks louder than words. From maintaining the Sensory Garden to restoring Rochester Pier, our projects aim to bring lasting improvements to Rochester’s cherished landscapes. Here are just a few of the exciting initiatives we’re working on.
Rochester Pier

Following the closure of the historic Rochester Pier, FoRCE worked with our partners at Medway Council to get the fixed structure re-opened to the public. Now, we're undertaking the restoration and renovation of the pier to give it an exciting new future at the heart of the Esplanade Gardens. Find out more about our work on Rochester Pier.
Suffrage Sensory Garden

Our first major project was to restore and replant the Suffrage Sensory Garden in the Esplanade Gardens, dedicated to the life of local non-militant suffragist Vera Conway Gordon and located directly opposite her family home. Maintaining the garden is one of our significant ongoing volunteer activities. Read more about the Suffrage Sensory Garden project.
Litter Picking

Keeping our green spaces free of litter keeps our volunteers busy right through the year. We regularly collect litter from gardens, and from the river foreshore too. Find out more about our efforts to keep things tidy.
Anti-Social Behaviour

Our helpers and volunteers keep an eye out for anti-social behaviour such as graffiti, which we then report to Medway Council. We have successfully resolved many instances of vandalism and damage. Read more about how we combat anti-social behaviour.
Rochester Trail

The Rochester Trail is an exciting way to explore the green spaces, heritage, and breathtaking views that make Rochester so special. Officially opened by the Mayor of Medway, this trail has been brought to life with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and connects the heart of Rochester with Borstal through a scenic route of historical landmarks and natural beauty. Read more about the trail and how you can enjoy it.
Bulb Planting

Bulb planting is one of FoRCE’s long-standing efforts to bring early visual interest and support pollinators in our parks. Over the years, we’ve planted a variety of bulbs, including daffodils, alliums, and crocuses, to create vibrant displays that signal the arrival of spring. These bulbs not only brighten the landscape but also provide an early-season supply of pollen for bees and other pollinators. Read more about our bulb planting efforts.
Hedgerows

Our next major gardening initiative focuses on planting native hedgerows, such as along the fence that adjoins Hathaway Court and the park. This project is not only about enhancing the park’s appearance but also creating habitats and food sources for local wildlife. By introducing a mix of native shrubs and trees, we aim to foster biodiversity and strengthen the ecological balance of the area. Read more about our plans for planting native hedgerows.
Ornate Lights

The iconic ornate lights that have sat astride the entrance of the Esplanade Gardens are now over a century old. These lamp columns have illuminated the riverside for generations, but time, weather and vandalism have taken their toll. Recognising their importance to the character of the area, FoRCE has collaborated with the Rochester Bridge Trust (RBT), the City of Rochester Society and Medway Council to restore these unique structures to their former glory. Find out more about the restoration of the ornate lights.
